Why does our website need maintenance?
Like everything else, our website needs regular maintenance and support. Just as our car needs regular maintenance to avoid any problems, our website must also be properly updated to continue functioning as we intend.
The website of a business will make the first impression on visitors regarding your company.
According to a Stanford University study on online trust, typographical errors and broken or faulty links significantly impact a website's credibility more than we think. The best way to avoid such issues is to conduct regular checks on our website. Since WordPress is the most popular CMS platform, it is a frequent target for hackers. According to Forbes, hackers attack an average of 30,000 new websites every day. The most common reason for attacks on WordPress websites is outdated plugins that have been neglected and not updated to the latest version.
The COVID-19 pandemic led more people to search for information online, increasing attacks on websites. According to the FBI, cybercrimes rose by 300%, from 1,000 incidents to 4,000 daily (Source: The Hill).
It is, therefore, more important than ever to decide how secure we want our website to be.
But what should website maintenance include? At Site Design, we believe that regular maintenance at least should at least include:
- Updating the core WordPress version to the latest release
- Updating the theme and plugins
- Maintaining backups
- Monitoring performance and analyzing log files
- Installing and monitoring security software (Application Firewall)
